The "Sustainability: Meet the Experts Series" aims to bring together inspiring people who are shaping the world. Through cross-industry learning and collaboration, we hope this series will forge new relationships and create synergies that will transform your business and life.

HKIAC is pleased to co-organise its first event in the "Sustainability" series with Mayer Brown and Hula and to bring together a panel of experts: Anita Varshney, the Vice President, Strategy and Innovation of SAP Next-Gen, Edwin Keh, CEO of the Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel and Amita Haylock, Counsel in the IP & TMT group of Mayer Brown to discuss how technology got us into trouble and how it will help to save us. Topics include:

- How block-chain and AI can help the fashion industry and sustainability

- Textiles tech /manufacturing developments and how this will help

- Other bright innovations, start ups, new ideas, government initiatives

    Anita Varshney

    Vice President at Strategy and Innovation, SAP Next-Gen

    Passionate about change and transformation, working with global communities who are actively driving citizen agendas with focus on achieving sustainable global goals.
    Started my journey working with some of the top SAP customers in APAC region, supporting them on integrating their company-wide business processes, performance improvement projects including platform roll-outs and change management. Thereafter, I have been working with SAP Next-Gen team, leading strategy for our team members spread across the globe. While we started our collaboration with our academic network to bring innovations to SAP customers, we soon expanded to also work with growing ecosystem of investors, accelerators, incubators and start-ups. Empowering women leaders, supporting young women to pursue STEM education and gain skills as next-generation purpose-driven innovators also became an integral part of our program.
    More recently, our focus on driving innovation with purpose has brought us closer to other tech community partners including purpose driven partners, venture firms, futurists including NGOs and government. Purpose led campaigns, impact investing, global sustainable projects and 2030 Agenda excite, motivate me to do more with our global innovation community.

    CEO of Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel

    Mr Keh is the CEO of The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel. He is also on Faculty at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology where he teaches supply chain operations.

    Until April 2010 Edwin was the SVP COO of Wal-Mart Global Procurement. Prior to Wal-Mart Edwin managed a consulting group that has done work for companies on supply chain, manufacturing, and product design. The practice also did work for non-profit organizations and charities. Edwin co-founded the Consortium For Operational Excellence in Greater China (COER GC). The Consortium is sponsored by the Wharton School and Tsinghua University.

    Edwin had a career as senior executive with several US consumer goods and retail companies. He was the Managing Director of Payless Shoesource International, Donna Karan International, and Country Road Australia. He also worked for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees. Edwin serves on multiple industry and educational boards. He advises several other social enterprises.

    Edwin is the 2011 recipient of the Production and Operations Management Society’s Martin K. Starr Excellence in Production and Operations Management Practice Award, and is on the Debrett’s Hong Kong 100 as one of the most influential people in Technology and Digital sector.

    Counsel at Mayer Brown

    Amita Kaur Haylock is a counsel in the IP & TMT group of Mayer Brown in Hong Kong. Amita’s practice focuses on litigating intellectual property, competition and commercial disputes across a broad range of industries. Amita also advises on telecommunications, broadcasting and information technology matters.

    Amita advises both plaintiffs and defendants in relation to a broad range of commercial and intellectual property disputes including breach of a variety of commercial contracts and licensing agreements, infringement of intellectual property rights and for breach of confidence. In the litigation context, Amita has represented clients before the Telecommunications (Competition Provisions) Appeal Board, High Court, Court of Appeal, Court of Final Appeal and Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC). Her experience also includes the representation of applicants and respondents in high-profile judicial reviews concerning broadcasting and telecommunication issues.

    Amita is a strong advocate of pro-bono work and was the recipient of the Individual Gold Award at the Law Society Pro Bono and Community Service Awards 2018, in recognition of having contributed over 100 hours to pro-bono work, of which a significant portion was spent handling an arbitration case for a well-known charity.
